Remember in 2007 the teenage beauty from South Carolina who blamed education and lack of maps in her answer to the question: Why can’t 1/5 of all Americans find the U.S.A. on a world map?
‘Tis Beauty killed the Beast
Now, in last night’s Miss USA contest, Miss Utah made her bid for the worst answer ever to the following pageant question: “A recent report shows that in 40 percent of American families with children, women are the primary earners, yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?”
Not lack of maps this time, but education once again takes the blame. Some bonus points to Miss Utah, because lack of management common sense (a form of education) does contribute to women not getting equal pay for equal work. Her answer, however, is not going to do much for the cause.
To be fair, I have to say the question was not very well worded. At least give the ladies a chance. They are under a lot of pressure–bright lights, live audience, hundreds watching on TV, and their bras straining against the load.
Beauty and brains do come together now and then…for women and men. Most of us, I’m guessing, fall in the middle with a “Not bad” rating in both categories. And then there are some folks at the other end of the spectrum who are both stupid and butt-ugly…but I’ll talk about Congress in another blog.
Until we all develop some “common sense” the stereotypical image of the “dumb blonde” will continue to exist in the media and in our common consciousness.
Say, how do you get a blond to marry you? Tell her she’s pregnant…
